Fridays at the Library

Marcela Sanchez

On a Friday afternoon there’s nothing I hate most than hearing “The library will be closing in 10 minutes.” I sat there looking at my computer clock 5:47pm; any minute now and I would hear that damning phrase. Please noooo I begged internally. 5:50pm. I flinched and waited. Nothing! Then I remembered that just as I had come in, there had been children with Easter eggs…there must be some kind of activity going on…could it be that……, but just as I began to let my breath out in relief “The library will be closing in 9 minutes.” I saw the librarian at the main desk; she caught my eye; a second later, she started towards me and I started stashing my papers and notebooks in my bag; I had just slammed my laptop closed when she came around the corner “Did you hear my announcement that the library will be closing in 9 minutes” she said with an air of self-importance. I nodded and kept grabbing my stuff as fast as I could. ”Some people have head phones on,” she said by way of explanation. “Yeah” I threw over my shoulder as I ducked my head and darted out. No point in lingering. I always left as fast as I could when I heard that damning phrase “the library will be closing in _ minutes.”
