Eye Contact

David Lindsay

can't force myself to look you in the eyes

when our pupils connect, your lips showing

a smile, i cast mine down & frown inside.

seconds—or minutes—can't tell in this light,

meander by, my feet won't stop moving.

can't force myself to look you in the eyes.

the carpet—green & grey & stained with grime

looks like drunken weekends smoking, writing

alone, eyes cast down as i drown inside.

memories of my young self; stubborn eye

contact, those liquid words pouring.

can't force myself to look you in the eyes.

the moment fades now—your face passes by,

the dizzy sensation remains, chewing

my lip, organs shifting around inside.

just me & regret now, ask myself why

i won't simply just shake your hand. knowing

i can't force myself to look you in the eyes,

i feel like a house burning down inside.
