Valley of Fire

Mikelle Bender

Beneath the blue Nevadan sky, we see

An endless span of sun and shining sea

The cacti are as firm as coral reefs

The sand rolls slowly like the ocean waves

As windblown tumbleweeds are thundering

All lost in beauty of flat impression

The desert wind makes melancholy light

Petrified red flames lick wounds of the past

New sediments form ancient lore

The sound of silent drumming petroglyphs
